Winter Driving Safety Tips

With up to 14 inches of snow expected this week, Colorado drivers need to play it safe to avoid serious accidents on dangerous roadways. The holidays will have many families on the road that would otherwise avoid driving in such a storm, adding to the risk of accidents. Before you head out for your holiday plans, take a minute to look over these helpful tips.

  • Make sure that cell phones are charged before leaving and car chargers for your phones are in place
  • Make sure you have snow tires with the proper amount of tread. Avoid traveling on worn tires.
  • Avoid driving if at all possible, if you must travel, drive slowly.
  • Leave several car lengths between you and other drivers
  • Check that your emergency kit includes jumper cables, a flashlight with working batteries, a folding shovel, rock salt or cat litter, a first aid kid, emergency flares and enough blankets for your family.
  • Leave plenty of room to stop your vehicle before traffic lights and stop signs
  • Do not pass plows or other road crews on the road

If you are involved in an accident due to the weather, move your vehicle as far as possible from the road to avoid subsequent collisions. If another vehicle is involved in the accident be sure to get contact information, exchange insurance information, and request an officer or emergency medical team to come to the scene if needed. If you are injured due to a collision that is not your fault, contact a qualified Colorado personal injury attorney as soon as you are able.
